Business On Board - Leadership In Action
Learn | Discover | Build | Enhance
BUSINESS ON BOARD is a dynamic program designed to help create, build and sustain strong, effective boards for nonprofit arts and social service organizations. Since a Non-Profit is only as good as its Board, this innovative and comprehensive development and placement program is designed to identify, recruit, train and place a diverse pool of talented professionals as board members of arts organizations.
The Business on Board Program is unique in the following ways:
- Leadership in action, not leadership in a book: candidates encounter a real-life opportunity to apply their skills in a way that will have a substantial impact on the future of an arts or social service organization.
- Focus is on contribution, not the individual: this is not another 10-step program about how to be more efficient or better manage your time. Rather it is a means to make a contribution to the community by lending your skills in a collaborative manner.
- Get Connected: candidates meet individuals of different professional backgrounds, artists and involved leaders in their community.
- Support the Arts: this opportunity enables you to be a player and become involved in Phoenix's dynamic arts community.
- Support Social Services: this opportunity enables you to be directly involved in making a social difference in our community.

Testimonials
“I had the opportunity to participate in the Spring 2006 Business on Board training through my law firm. At the time, I had never been involved with a board of directors but, as luck would have it, I had recently been invited to join an advisory board for a local social entrepreneur organization. The BOB training provided me with the resources and confidence to become an active board participant. Board service is a worthwhile experience and BOB taught me that it should not to be taken lightly. I would recommend the BOB training to any individual thinking about joining a board of directors as well as those individuals who may already be serving on boards. The experience was tremendous.”
Christine E. Broucek - Attorney, Bryan Cave LLP (BOB Class III)
“Prior to this training, I was unsure about the responsibilities and how much I can contribute to a non profit board. Now I am more confident about the value that my skills and experiences can bring in. And while it is targeted towards individuals who are interested in becoming a board member, there are also learnings applicable to for profit organizations as they covered relevant topics such as organizational structure, team dynamics, strategic planning, etc. “
Sheila Vertuno - American Express (BOB Class IV)
“I appreciated the opportunity to experience such a comprehensive overview of the responsibilities a board member takes on when joining an organization. The presentations were eye-opening – and I would recommend the BOB training to anyone who is thinking of joining a board. From fund-raising and advocacy to legal and fiduciary issues, the presenters provided a roadmap that will help us become more effective board members. I also appreciate the connections I made with the presenters and other participants. I know that I can call on this network of committed, knowledgeable individuals when questions and challenges arise, and this will be invaluable.”
Marjorie Rice - Vice President, Wells Fargo Regional Banking Communications (BOB Class V)
