I hope you had a great summer. I am looking forward to this coming year working with the Arts & Business Council and the organizations and businesses we benefit.

Please join us next month, October 8th, at the 12th annual Best of Phoenix A’Fare. This event is a celebration of all the people and businesses selected as the best in their category by New Times readers. This event consistently attracts an attendance of 1200+ and showcases 25-30 of the Valley’s Best of Phoenix restaurants. Restaurants will sample their award-winning cuisine. Guests will enjoy wine, cocktails and beer. There will be live music to keep everyone entertained.

If you would like to participate in the final voting, cast your votes here http://polls.phoenixnewtimes.com/polls/phx/bestof2011/

The Arts & Business Council is honored to be the Charity recipient of this fun celebration. And while the A’Fare is benefiting us, it’s not very often that the arts and cultural community has an opportunity to support the very people and businesses that support them throughout the year. This is that opportunity. Let’s show our thanks by being a part of their celebration.

On a side note, I’m particularly interested in the venue. It’s the old Borders bookstore at the Bilmore (24th and Camelback). I don’t believe it’s been converted, so I’m curious what New Times will do to it, given its one night occupancy.

Event specifics:
Date: Saturday, October 8, 2011
Time: 7:00 PM – 11:30 PM
Location: 2402 E Camelback Rd Suite 200, Phoenix (Former Borders location in Biltmore Fashion Park)

Tickets:
Tickets are $35 each. They can be purchased online at www.phoenixnewtimes.com/afare. Day of ticket sales will be available at the door, but CASH ONLY. Ticket includes all food and beverage within the event. All tickets will be available at will call.

Raffle:
In addition to supporting the A’Fare, we will have an opportunity for you to directly support the Arts & Business Council too. We are hosting a terrific raffle… so bring some extra cash (1 for $5 or 5 for $20).

I’m looking forward looking forward to seeing you there.

Thanks,
Perry
Arts Business Council President

93 PROFESSIONALS FROM NONPROFIT AND FOR-PROFIT ARENAS GRADUATE FROM 2011
BUSINESS ON BOARD TRAINING
Class Reflected Valley’s Diversity With Funding From American Express, Arizona Lottery

PHOENIX, Ariz. (May xx, 2011): More than 90 professionals representing the Valley’s diverse
ethnic communities and both nonprofit and for-profit businesses have graduated from Business on Board,
an intense five-month program that trains potential board members for leadership positions with nonprofit
organizations.

Organized and managed by the Arts & Business Council of Greater Phoenix, and with partial
funding from American Express and the Arizona Lottery to identify, engage and train members of the
Valley’s diverse ethnic, gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender communities, Business on Board
“expanded and enhanced not only the diversity but the available pool of candidates for service.” said
Debbie Paine, executive director of the Arts & Business Council.

Participants in this year’s class ranged from small-business owners to corporate executives,
managers and front-line employees from banks, aerospace manufacturers, law firms, state and county
agencies, utilities, arts and human service agencies and even the National Association of Asian American
Professionals and ASU.

Since starting the program in 2005, nearly 300 individuals have graduated from the program. More
than 150 individuals have already been placed on nonprofit arts and social service agency boards.
“An incredible experience that couldn’t have been timelier and more important given the recent
revelations about the Fiesta Bowl,” was how David Drennon, VP Marketing & Development, Arizona Small
Business Association, described the training that was completed this month and included Board Rules and
Responsibilities, Effective Nonprofit Board Leadership, Legal and Ethical Responsibilities, Fundraising,
Financial Responsibility, Diversity, Advocacy and Politics, and The Art of Networking. “Each of us now
goes into these new roles with a full understanding of our roles, responsibilities and commitments to the
organizations and agencies we’ll engage with.”
