Program Basics:

BUSINESS ON BOARD is a dynamic program designed to support nonprofit arts and social service organizations by helping to create, build, and sustain strong, effective boards.  This innovative and comprehensive development and placement program is designed to identify, recruit and train a diverse pool of talented professionals. The board placement process matches the strengths and requirements of the Business on Board graduates with the needs of interested nonprofit organizations.

SESSION TOPICS AND OBJECTIVES:

Context for Effective Governance – this “first” session sets the stage for the rest of the sessions.  It provides the basic knowledge tools necessary to understand the challenges and environment a nonprofit and its board face on a daily basis.  An attendee of this session will understand the nonprofit marketplace; the governance model; board roles and responsibilities; strategic thinking and action; and, the keys to high-performance governance.

 Diversity – an attendee of this session will learn the value of diverse perspectives to the decision-making process; understand different cultural styles and attitudes; learn effective cross-cultural communications; and, how to find diverse board members.

Communications – an attendee of this session will understand the board’s appropriate role in effectively communicating the organization’s message; learn how to champion and advocate for the organization through social networking and social media; media campaign and, will learn how to cultivate and develop relationships for the benefit of the nonprofit.

 Fundraising – an attendee of this session will learn how to motivate a board of directors to be fundraisers; learn different ways to support the fundraising effort; learn about mistakes that doom fundraising efforts; learn about considerations in creating a fund development plan and determining which strategies are optimal; and, be involved in training on effective solicitations and simulations of corporate asks.

 Financial Responsibilities – an attendee of this session will be able to read a nonprofit financial statement; learn different ways to assess the financials; what is the IRS form 990 and changes that affect it; importance of knowing the bottom line; and, will be involved in some actual financial analysis.

HANDS ON WORK

Case Studies – an attendee will be involved in nonprofit board case studies for small group work; will review key elements of effective teamwork; will present findings and recommendations for critique by the rest of the class and the instructor.

True Stories of Life in the Boardroom – an attendee will hear first hand from Business on Board graduates about their experiences and challenges as board members.

Mock Board Meeting – an attendee will experience being assigned a role (character) that experiences leadership challenge scenarios and ethical issues and learns how to deal with them.

Special Initiative – Diversity Leaders Scholarship Opportunity

Diversity Leaders is a special initiative, generously funded by the Arizona Lottery and American Express Charitable Fund, is timely and cost effective solution for identifying diverse leaders in our community and providing them crucial board training.  This program connects the Asian, Hispanic, GLBT, Native American, African American/Black American, and Caucasian communities with Business on Board, a unique governance training program that is designed to help create, build and sustain strong effective boards for nonprofit organizations.

Grant scholarships will be awarded to individuals from the communities (Asian, Hispanic, GLBT, Native American, African American/Black, and Caucasian) who come forward with a sincere interest in community board service. Graduate of the program will be connected to nonprofit arts/cultural, health and human service, and animal welfare nonprofit organizations. Those who are recruited to the boards of these nonprofit organizations will provide the leadership and perspectives that are desperately needed in our nonprofit community.

Applications are being accepted October through January 6, 2013.  All applications for scholarship will be reviewed on a selection process. A nonrefundable registration fee of $100 is required from those selected for your commitment to completing the program.  A certificate of completion will be presented the day of graduation.
